Campaign to change false and misleading narrative about Israel in a AQA's Geography A-level textbook

Date:
27 February 2011

The Institute for Middle Eastern Democracy (IMED) has released a report that brings to light claims of false and misleading narrative in AQA's Geography A-level textbook by John Smith and Roger Knill.

The book's description of the Arab-Israeli conflict has been described by Adi Manning, one of the students leading the complaint, as containing "several blatantly biased statements".

Sam Westrop, Director of the IMED, stated that, "The tone and language of this book are not conducive to the well-being of Jewish students. The authors fail to set out the fact that certain ideologies threaten not just the state of Israel, but the United Kingdom as well. The omissions and loaded accounts fail to reach the high academic standard that is expected in Further Education; and fail to provide any historical accuracy or the objective, broad-minded understanding that education should provide.

The ZCC calls upon AQA to immediately edit the text in this book to reflect a less partisan, more academic and more constructive education for a generation of students who are being deeply and dangerously mis-educated."
