The University of California Berkeley Student senate voted a symbolic measure to divest from firms doing business with Israel. Many who voted for the bill had the impression that it was meant as protest against war crimes in general, though obviously this was not the case.
The bill was vetoed by The Associated Students of The University of California Berkeley President Will Smelko, but the veto can be overridden by a 2/3 vote. A vote on the issue that was to have been held last week was postponed to April 14.
Owing to an organized write-in campaign, mail has been running 4-1 in favor of divestment. Your urgent help is needed!!
PLEASE WRITE TO Senate@asuc.org, with copies to president@asuc.org (President of UC Berkeley Students Association) , and to chancellor@berkeley.edu, and UC President Mark Yudof at president@ucop.edu .
In the subject: "Do not override Presidential Veto of Israel divestment resolution" or something similar.
Do not ask people to send identical letters, because no matter you heard, identical letters look like an organized campaign of automatons at work, and get less weight.
HELP SPREAD THE WORD!!!
